Thai Hot Guys Event in Malaysia Cancelled After Backlash

Those in Malaysia who were anticipating an entertaining performance by the TikTok-famous waiter-performers, Thai Hot Guys, will be disappointed as the event has been cancelled.

The popular buff waiters from the Staneemeehoi restaurant in Bangkok were scheduled to perform in Kuala Lumpur for the grand opening of a new nightspot called Privacy Club Tun Razak on March 30. However, the event was met with criticism from netizens and political figures, and subsequently shut down.

 

The restaurant and its viral crew of nightie-clad male wait staff are known for their lively and often raunchy performances in between serving customers their food and drink. According to Facebook posts promoting the event, the group had been invited to mark the club's opening in the capital city.

 

However, the event was quickly deemed "insensitive" and "inappropriate," particularly as it coincided with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which began on March 23. Takiyuddin Haji Hassan, Secretary General of Malaysia's Islamist Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) political party, described the event as "immoral" and "disgusting."

 

The name of the club appears to reference the country's second prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak, who is the father of jailed former Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak. This likely worsened the situation, as Najib's son, Nazif Najib, expressed his disapproval in a Facebook post published on Wednesday. He was quoted as saying, "This is extremely inappropriate, and I see it as an insult to my late grandfather. I am utterly disappointed."

 

The controversy also caught the attention of Malaysian authorities, who have since taken action against the club and the event. The police have received 60 reports about the event, according to Malay Mail. The bar does not hold an entertainment license, and the premise, registered as a restaurant, does not have a valid operating license. As a result, the club's management has issued a public apology and stated that it respects the religious sensitivities in the country and "will not violate the laws that have been set."
