Giorgia Meloni's Proposed Language and Food Laws: Nationalism in Action?

by Quick Picker 2023. 4. 2.

Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has long been a champion of Italian culture and tradition, emphasizing the importance of preserving the country's unique identity. Her recent proposed legislation, which includes fines of up to €100,000 for the use of foreign languages, particularly English, in official communications, is just the latest example of her nationalist agenda.

Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy, has presented the draft bill to the Italian Parliament, arguing that the use of foreign words and phrases negatively impacts society as a whole, and it is not merely a matter of following a passing trend. The bill's intention is to preserve and cultivate the Italian language, mandating the use of Italian in both public and private entities.

The proposed penalties are not limited to language, however. Meloni's government has also banned the use of laboratory-produced food, which it considers a threat to Italy's agri-food heritage. The proposed fines of up to €60,000 and the confiscation of "synthetic food" may seem extreme, but they reflect Meloni's deep commitment to Italy's traditional Mediterranean diet.

These proposed laws have generated controversy both within Italy and abroad, with some seeing them as a step towards isolationism and away from global cooperation. Nevertheless, Meloni remains committed to her nationalist agenda, which emphasizes the importance of Italy's cultural identity and heritage above all else.
